What is LASIK?

Am I a candidate for LASIK?
Good candidates for LASIK generally:
- Are 18 years or older, with spectacle power that has stayed stable for at least a year
- Have corneas that are thick enough and healthy enough in shape for safe laser reshaping
- Are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding, since hormonal changes can temporarily alter vision
- Don't have uncontrolled diabetes, active eye infections, severe dry eye or certain corneal conditions like keratoconus
LASIK isn't automatically right for everyone, and a responsible screening will sometimes recommend against it. If your cornea is too thin or irregularly shaped, your surgeon may suggest an alternative or advise against surgery altogether — that honest assessment matters more than proceeding regardless.
Pre-LASIK screening
Before any LASIK procedure, a detailed screening is essential — this is not a same-day walk-in surgery. It typically includes a refraction and visual acuity check, corneal topography (mapping the corneal surface), pachymetry (measuring corneal thickness), a dilated retina check, and a tear-film/dry-eye assessment. This screening is what determines both your eligibility and the exact laser treatment plan for your eyes.
How LASIK works

- The eye is numbed with anaesthetic drops — no injection
- A thin corneal flap is created using a laser (not a blade), then gently lifted
- An excimer laser reshapes the underlying corneal tissue according to your personalised wavefront map

Each eye takes only a few minutes of actual laser time, and most patients are able to go home the same day, with someone accompanying them since vision is blurry for the first few hours.

Recovery after LASIK
Most patients notice a dramatic improvement in vision within a few hours to a day, though it may feel slightly hazy or dry at first. You'll be prescribed antibiotic and lubricating eye drops for the first few weeks. For the first week: avoid rubbing your eyes, avoid swimming, dusty environments and eye makeup, and wear a protective shield at night if advised. Most people return to desk work and screen use within 2-3 days, and to driving once vision is confirmed stable at your follow-up visit. Follow-up checks are usually scheduled at day 1, week 1 and around one month.
Safety, risks & limitations
LASIK is one of the most widely performed elective eye procedures worldwide, with a strong safety record when candidates are screened properly. As with any procedure, it carries a small risk of under- or over-correction, temporary dry eye, glare or halos at night, or rarely, flap-related complications — your surgeon will discuss your individual risk profile during screening. LASIK does not prevent presbyopia (the natural need for reading glasses after your 40s) or cataract, both of which are separate, age-related changes.
